I've found the best way to hone your writing skills is by belonging to a writer's group.
Here in God's Own, a colloquialism for New Zealand, we have the Romance Writer's of New Zealand who provide fabulous support, writing workshops and guest speakers at annual conferences.
Most groups have competitions where you gain valuable feedback.
NZRW has a monthly newsletter, Heart to Heart, that features news, achievements, resources and workshops and any up coming competitions.
Find and join a local group, your writing will love it.
